Veiled beauty - but please let the veil stay!

It was during the time when French President Nicholas Sarkozy had come up with one of his widely debated statement that burkhas were ‘not welcome’ in France. As we discussed the topic in office, one of my colleagues said that burkha or veil should stay. The reason however had nothing to do with religion, culture or anything related to these.

He explained: During his bachelor days, once he was traveling in a train. In the berth opposite his were sitting a burkha-lad lady and her relative. My friend, having nothing to do, just lolled around when his eyes met the eyes of the lady clad in the burkha. “She had beautiful eyes,” he said with a nostalgic look in his eyes.

He started comparing those pair of eyes with some of the best Bollywood actresses, Aishwarya Rai included. It was a day in July — hot and sultry. Since the bogey was sans air conditioning, it became unbearable for the passengers to sit in comfort. Some fanned themselves with folded newspapers, but my friend, still lost in those enchanting eyes, sat unaware of the heat. As they proceeded towards their destination, our veiled lady could not take it any more. Uncomfortable as it was, after much discussion with her relative she decided to do away with the veil.

Even today my friend wishes that she hadn’t! Our lady was taking off her veil as the train entered a tunnel. Absolute darkness and excitement prevailed as the bogey was filled with smoke emitted from the engine. In just a couple of minutes the bogey was once more filled with light as the train exited the tunnel and she was standing before my friend without the veil — teeth almost black from the ghutka and pan masala and a face that gave no indication as to whether she was less lady-like or more manly (sorry ladies)!

More disappointed than shocked, my friend’s dream run now cut short, he climbed up to his upper-most berth and lay down trying to get some sleep to calm his nerves.

“I still wish she hadn’t removed that veil,” he said with a frown as we laughed hard at his expense.

Now my fundas of life is: Eyes say a lot about a person* (*Conditions apply)

When some element of mystery is left to the beholder, the experience is always magical… one starts musing on what could be rather than what is. Se la vee - thats life and that is what makes life worth living - hope, curiosity :)
